By early 2007, the old Hungry Fisherman property was being violated by two new hotels, building right over the old lake! These would become a Residence Inn and Courtyard Marriott. But just to the west of these new developments, remnants of the old Hungry Fisherman parking lot still remained, and the old road was called Hungry Fisherman Dr. as a tribute to the past. In the last few years or so it was decided to rename the road to Sleepy Hollow Dr., but that's a rant left for another photo! If you look close at the I-55 access ramp in the left of the screen shot, evidence of the expressway's expansion (still in progress in early 2007) can be seen also.

In the upcoming Hungry Fisherman Horn Lake tribute uploads: a couple of vintage matchbook scans, an early 80's yearbook photo, and views of what the area looks like from the air in 2011, and from the ground present day. Also, aerial views of the other Memphis area Hungry Fisherman location!

This view across the old Hungry Fisherman site in Southaven Mississippi looks southwest right across the old parking lot. The cell tower is in the corner of the now crumbling parking lot, and the building was just out of view to the left. Where was the lake? I'm pretty much sitting right over the north end of it! Pretty sad when real estate is so valuable you have to drain a lake and build hotels and parking on it.

This is just to the south of the intersection where the side access road met up with the "main" Hungry Fisherman scenic road that went the long way around the lake. Nearly the entire length of this main access road still exists today, even though the lake itself and the old Hungry Fisherman building are long gone. And unfortunately, when I revisited this area recently to take these pics, I noticed it had been decided to do away with the "Hungry Fisherman Dr." name and re-dub the road with the sickenly cutesy name "Sleepy Hollow Dr.", because of all the hotels I reckon.

Who approved this road renaming nonsense!?? If our beloved city leaders in Southaven have so little regard for their city's own history, I wish Horn Lake would stage a hostile takeover of this area so they can have all the tax revenues! Did our new mayor have a hand in this? I certainly hope not! He probably ate at The Hungry Fisherman many times himself.

Many Hungry Fisherman locations were built over lakes, OK maybe just oversized ponds sometimes(!), as evidenced by the scene on this matchbook cover. The fish that lived within those bodies of water around the restaurants must of been happy and well fed when the chain was in it's hey dey! Every kid would rather go out on the docks and feed the fish instead of eat. The Horn Lake location looked very much like the matchbook cover pictured here and lasted at least into the mid-late 80's. maybe early 90's even. It became a creaky old antique circa mid-late 90's before it was torn down. If only I had thought to take pictures back then when I visited the antique store!

By 2010, the area around the old Hungry Fisherman site had taken another dramatic turn, with the land to the east between the old HF access road and Southcrest Pkwy. becoming the home of a Best Buy. A very short time later a small strip center would be built just south of Best Buy. Closer to Goodman Rd. there's a Longhorn Steakhouse, Abbay's, and an Aldi grocery, much of that stuff actually pre-dates Best Buy itself. In late 2013, a Mattress Firm and Visionworks opened next to Longhorn in another new building. Time marches on, but even today part of the old Hungry Fisherman parking lot still remains behind those hotels!
