Najma Akhtar was born in Chelmsford to a familly from Najibabad in Uttar Pradesh. Sge made a big impact in 1988 with her first album which mixed Ghazal and Jazz. She is besr known since for her collaboratios with Rock musicians (e.g. Robert Plant, Jah Wooble, Gary Lucas) usually performing with standard rock group instrumentation. This was a much more traditional set of Sufiana Kalam accompanied by Sirish Manji (the son of Pandit Bhagwanji Manji) and William Rees Hofmann (a Doctoral Researcher at SOAS).
