5th July 2019 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall (Foyer), London SE1.
Part of Part of New Music Biennial / Friday Lunch (free event).
Country: Iraq (born Syria, British resident). Style: Arabic / Western music fusion.
Lineup: Khyam Allami (oud).
Khyam Allami was born in Syria to Iraqi parents and moved to London as a child. His first musical involvement was as a drummer in metal, post-rock and progressive rock bands. Then in his early twenties he developed an interest in Arabic music and began studying the Oud. I took photos of him in 2010 and 2012 playing traditional music on an acoustic instrument (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/tags/khyamallami,-newmu...). In recent years he has listened to a lot of experimental electro-acoustic music and crosspollinated this with the traditional Arabic maqam system to produce what he has described as "ambient arabic maqam music". Allami is a PRSF New Music Biennial composer and undertook a new commission of an the immersive sound installation for the festival. For this Friday Lunch concert he was performing another of his compositions "Kawalees: Part I", whuch was premiered in 2018, on a Godin Electroacoustic Oud.
