Archie Shepp was born in Fort Lauderdale, FL, but raised in Philadelphia, PA. These days he divides his time between Paris and Hadley, MA. In the 1960s and 70s he was part of the Free Jazz scene (being part of the groups of Cecil Taylor and John Coltrane, the New York Contemporary Five as well leading his own lineups). Later on the influence of musicians from an earlier generation like Ben Webster and Don Byas became more prominent. As well as other musical styles like Gospel. At this concert he was performing with musicians from the USA, France and a specially assembled British choir. They performed tunes and songs by Coltrane, Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn, Calvin Massey, Billie Holiday/Arthur Herzog Jr, as well Shepp and Myer's own compositions.
