26th January 2018 at Drygate Brewery, Glasgow.

Late Night Sessions, Celtic Connections Festival, www.celticconnections.com/.

Country: Estonia & Britain - Scotland. Style: Traditional Estonian.

Lineup: Cätlin Mägi (torupill/parmupill [jaw harp]/v), Eeva Talsi (v/violin), Karoliina Kreintaal (violin/v), and guests: Finlay MacDonald (border pipes/low whistle), Craig Baxter (bodhrán).

Cätlin Mägi is from Märjamaa in north Estonia. This is not a traditional area for the Torupill or Estonian Bagpipes, but she now plays them (and other instruments) in several bands including this one. It is named after Torupilli Jussi [Juhan Maaker] (1845-1930), the best bagpiper of his day, and many of the tunes play by the band are from his recordings. They were joined by two guests: Finlay MacDonald, whose band I saw at the festival in 2005 and 2007, but have only photographed with neXo in 2016 (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/albums/72157664037410672) and Craig Baxter, now with Gnoss but not when I saw them in 2017.
