14th November 2017 at Royal Festival Hall, London SE1.

London Jazz Festival, www.londonjazzfestival.org.uk/.

Country: South Africa & United States. Style: Jazz - Modern.

Lineup: Abdullah Ibrahim [Adolph Johannes "Dollar" Brand] (p), Cleave Guyton Jr. (alto sax/flute/piccolo), Lance Bryant (tenor sax), Marshall McDonald (baritone sax), Andrae Murchison (flugelhorn), Noah Jackson (b/cello), Will Terrill (d).

Born in Cape Town, Abdullah Ibrahim is now aged 83. In the late 1950s he was part of the band Jazz Epistles with Hugh Masekela (some of whose tunes were played at the concert - it was originally scheduled as a reunion with Masekela before he suffered ill health this year). Ibrahim moved to London in 1962 and on to New York in 1965. From 1990 onwards he has divided his time between the USA and South Africa. Since 1982 he has led a band called Ekaya, though I also saw him with a trio in 2005 at the same venue.
In this photo: Acknowledging the audience at the end of the concert.
