15th December 2017 at Royal Festival Hall (Clore Ballroom), London SE1.
Friday Tonic / Part of Nordic Matters and of Wintertime Festival [usually called Winter Festival] (free event).
Country: Norway. Style: Jazz / Improv / Folk.
Lineup: Terje Isungset (ice instruments), Maria Skranes (v/electronics/ice chimes).
Terje Isungset is from Buskerud county in southern Norway and has for many years been part of the Jazz and Traditional music scenes as a drummer/percussionist (I have seen him before in 2007 at Kings Place with Isglem and in 2005 at Queens Hall, Edinburgh with Groupa). Since 1999 (when he was performing at a concert behind a frozen waterfall in Lillehammer) he has experimented with Ice Music (organising an annual festival since 2006). He plays instruments constructed from blocks of ice using chainsaws, knives and drills, with the blocks either sourced from nature near where he is playing or (as at this concert) brought over from Norway (he believes the nature of the water affects the sound). This time the instruments were Ice Percussion, Icehorn, Ice Trumpet, Isringles (chimes), and Iceofon (xylophone). Over the years he has collaborated with several other musicians. This time is was Maria Skranes from the electro-pop Machine Birds.
