One of Rio de Janeiro’s oldest Samba Schools (founded in 1928 as Deixa Falar). Named after a neighbourhood in the North Zone of the city (which in turn was named after the city’s founder). They performed to an almost empty Royal Albert Hall. The concert also feature the singer Alcione.

Lineup included: Uria Noguera Xekere (conductor/per), Rebeca Vallim (v)

Maracatudo Mafuá play the music of the north eastern state of Pernambuco. Maracatu and Ciranda are two of the popular rhythms. The singer and dancers were backed by Alfaias (bass drums) and Caixas (snare drums).

Lineup: Yuri Moreno (v/maracas), Sara McGuinness (piano), Elpidio Caicedo (bass g/v), Bill Bland (congas), Emeris Solis (bongos/cowbell).

Soneando were formed in 2000 by Sara McGuiness. Depending on the engagement there are 5 to 8 musicians. An alternative vocalist used by the band is Jesus Cutino.

In this photo: Despite repeated appeals from Elpidio Caicedo, few people danced. This couple were the main exception.
