I noticed this old stump while out on my short hike Saturday. Hope you like it.

This is a shot I took Saturday morning along Hwy 58 (which follows much of the legendary "Wilderness Road" through the western portion of Lee County). The "White Rocks" as they are called, are about a mile long and are atop Stone Mountain about halfway between Rose Hill and Ewing, Va. Unfortunately, I could only get about a third of the cliffs in view since I was having to use my 55-200 Nikon zoom. My regular lens (18-55) decided to kick the bucket Friday.

The White Rocks became a very important landmark to the pioneers who traveled the Wilderness Road. They knew when they saw these in the distance, that the entrance into Kentucky was near. When they reached them, only a day's journey remained until they crossed through Cumberland Gap. (The White Rocks are about 15 miles east of the Gap). They are now a part of the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, and can be accessed from a trail at the bottom of the mountain at Ewing. The view from the top is awesome on a clear day, and there are a few shots from there, elsewhere on my photostream.

Yesterday, I hiked back through Colson Lane and Ridge Trail down at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. (The "Gap" is about 18 miles due west of where I live). I never met a soul during my short walk (about an hour or so). I would've walked longer, but my Mom called me on my cell wanting me to pick up her prescriptions (she can't drive) at the pharmacy here in Rose Hill, before they closed. (Yes, our small town pharmacy closes at noon on Saturdays)! So, although I was all the way back on the ridge of the mountain, being the wonderful son that I am, turned around and came back out to get her meds for her! I took this shot on the way back out. There are a couple of these little bridges that cross Station Creek.
