EXPLORE: 10/23/12 #341

When I saw this old box in front of an abandoned residence, it immediately caught my eye. The old papers that were sticking out of the open door gave this old thing such character. I decided to tweak the photo and add a couple layers of texture. I then searched for a quote that would be suitable to go along with it.

EXPLORE: 10/20/12 #383

I"ve developed a fascination for old mailboxes here lately. I spotted this jewel while out on the backroads this morning. I also photographed several others, but this one was my favorite.

I have always looked forward to going to the mailbox, even as a kid. I knew exactly when the mailman ran, and I would listen and look for his car in the afternoons when I was home. We even had our papers delivered by mail...a day late because there was no home delivery that far out in the country. (I once had to drive a mile to my paper box because they wouldn't come any farther accross the ridge). It was always exciting getting a letter from a cousin, or even and uncle or aunt. (Kids today wouldn't understand in this era of cell phones and text messaging)! Christmas was really a time to watch the mailbox. I couldn't wait to get all the cards that everyone sent everybody...especially the ones that had a little money in them for us kids. Back then you could afford to send out dozens of cards. Now I send out virtually none. Altough we still have mailboxes today, it is the memories of those from yester-year that really mean the most.

I found these two mailboxes interesting the other day. I guess the bright puke orange University of Tennessee box caught my eye. (Do you understand I am NOT a UT fan. I prefer the Florida Gators and Kentucky Wildcats...or anybody that plays against UT). Anyhoo....I did photograph these in Tennessee, so you would expect somebody to like their university. I thought the mailboxes needed something to offset the prison orange, so I slapped some textures by JoesSistah over them.

I thought if I was going to photograph mailboxes, I ought to include my own rather dented and leaning one. I've layed off to replace it for years, but just haven't done it. It still has the old route and box number on its side. About all I've ever done to it in the 13 years I've lived here is add the 911 address to the post a couple years ago.

This old box was sitting in front of an old, abandoned house over in the edge of Tennessee.
