These two trestles are located in the neighboring Scott County, Va. The one on the left was built in 1890, while the taller one (167 ft.) on the right was built in 1908. Both of these span the mouth of Copper Creek that empties into the Clinch River just to the left of the structures. Both are still in use. When I arrived this morning, the fog prevented me from getting the scenic shots of the trestles until later in the morning. I decided to try to get both of them disappearing into the mist, so I climbed the steep bank to the top of the shorter one and rested my camera against the "No Trespassing" sign. Although I liked the color photo, I decided it would make a nice b& w. Of the images I made today, this one is,by far, my favorite.

This shot was taken in the early morning from the highway bridge that crosses the Clinch River in Scott County, Virginia. To see the taller Copper Creek Trestle, I had to stand in the middle of the bridge ((with four lanes of fairly steady traffic). Although, I was not satisfied with the image, I figured it would have to do considering cars, trucks, and semis were blasting past about three ft. behind me. I did not use a tripod because that would've took too long. Besides, every large vehicle that went by made the concrete bridge shake anyway. (The trestle was not visible from either end of the bridge...only the middle). Needless to say, this was about the most nervous I've ever been while making a photo. I finally went to one end of the bridge and waded through nettles and mud to get down next to the river for a few shots, but I liked the view from the top better.

This trestle is located across the Clinch River on the Rye Cove Rd. in Scott County, Virginia. The really neat thing about taking this shot was that I was standing on a swinging bridge that also spans the river just below the railroad bridge. The bad thing about it was that the swinging bridge bounces and sways as you walk across it, making using a tripod or monopod almost useless. I had to stand very still in one spot with the camera held against the wire side until the bridge's up and down movement subsided. (It never completely stopped).

This is the upper Copper Creek Railroad trestle at Speers Ferry in Scott County Virginia. There is another much smaller trestle that runs beside it. The upper trestle (built in1908) is 185 ft. high and 1160 ft. long. This photo was taken next to Hwy. 23 yesterday.
