This stone structure In Cumberland Gap, Tn. is all that remains of the 30 ft. tower and foundry that was originally built between 1813 and 1835. This foundry is considered one of the last examples of a cold-blast charcoal furnace. The foundry consisted of several buildings and a 30 ft. overshot wheel that drove the furnace. The "Iron Furnace" is now a part of the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.

Here's is another view from the Pinnacle Overlook in Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. The overlook is on the Virginia side of the Gap, seen in the extreme lower left of the photo. This particular view faces the little residential area known as Shawanee, Tn., which is on the backside of the town of Harrogate, Tn., unseen on the right of the photo.
This was taken very early in the morning, about a week and a half ago. What little fog was rising above Shawanee, and the wind was blowing through the Gap like a hurrucane.

This is a shot I took Saturday morning along Hwy 58 (which follows much of the legendary "Wilderness Road" through the western portion of Lee County). The "White Rocks" as they are called, are about a mile long and are atop Stone Mountain about halfway between Rose Hill and Ewing, Va. Unfortunately, I could only get about a third of the cliffs in view since I was having to use my 55-200 Nikon zoom. My regular lens (18-55) decided to kick the bucket Friday.
The White Rocks became a very important landmark to the pioneers who traveled the Wilderness Road. They knew when they saw these in the distance, that the entrance into Kentucky was near. When they reached them, only a day's journey remained until they crossed through Cumberland Gap. (The White Rocks are about 15 miles east of the Gap). They are now a part of the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, and can be accessed from a trail at the bottom of the mountain at Ewing. The view from the top is awesome on a clear day, and there are a few shots from there, elsewhere on my photostream.

This is a view from the Pinnacle, located on the Virginia side of the Cumberland Gap. The city of Middlesboro, Ky. is located to the right of this mountain range. It is dubbed, "The city built in a meteorite crater."

This restored cabin is found on top of Brush Mountain in Southeastern Kentucky. It is one of several homesteads found in what is known as Hensley's Settlement. It can be accessed from Brownie's Creek, Ky. or Chadwell Gap Trail near Ewing Va. It is now a part of the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.
