This restored cabin is found on top of Brush Mountain in Southeastern Kentucky. It is one of several homesteads found in what is known as Hensley's Settlement. It can be accessed from Brownie's Creek, Ky. or Chadwell Gap Trail near Ewing Va. It is now a part of the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.

This was actually taken back in May when I hiked up to Hensley's Settlement on Brush Mountain in Kentucky. I'd love to go back up here in a few weeks once the leaves change, but I just don't know if my knees will agree to it. They've been throbbing like a toothache for the last few weeks. The Dr. changed my athritis medication yesterday, so I guess I'll have to wait and see!

This is a small portion of the downtown area of middlesboro, Ky. It is located in Bell County at the base of Cumberland Mountain. It is dubbed. "The city built in a crater," because geologists claim an ancient meteorite slammed into this region long ago. This small city has an estimated population of a little over 13,000. It was named after Middlesborough, England by its founder, Alexander Arthur, a Scotch businessman. The city was incorporated in 1890. As you can see from the surrounding mountains, coal is a big business in the region. Middlesboro is also the hometown of actor, Lee Majors, comedian Trish Suhr, and the late stage and movie actress Susan Kingsley.
The rest of the town is located just in behind the edge of the mountain on the right, running west toward the next town of Pineville, Ky. The shot was taken at an area just below the Pinnacle Overlook that is known as Ft. McCook, a Civil War position on Cumberland Mountain.

On my way to Breaks Interstate Park, I passed through Elkhorn City, Kentucky. As I passed this old school, I thought how spooky it looked. On the way back, I stopped to photograph it. Because of the chain link fence around the place, I had to stand on top of a guardrail, and prop against a road sign that stood in front. I don't know how long this one has been abandoned (It has a date of 1938 above the door) but the newer edition of the Elkhorn City School is just past this one.
