Kingman, Mohave County, Arizona

I was on edge as I photographed this approaching storm cell a few years ago. I was prepared to retreat to my car, but a few minutes later the storm veered to the right and started to dissipate.

Stay safe.

Mohave County, Arizona

On my way across northern Arizona to the Grand Canyon, I pulled off onto side roads several times, distracted by the summer monsoon weather.

Kingman, Arizona

Actually I was looking for an opportunity to try out my new lightning trigger gear.

Near Kingman, Arizona I saw some interesting storm clouds in the distance. I pulled off the freeway, made my way through town and found a street headed towards a high spot on the outskirts. The street soon faded into a track across the desert, but I did find my high spot.

At this point it is mid-afternoon and the storm appears to be heading straight at me. Not far ahead the clouds blotting out the mid-afternoon sun are casting a dark shadow on the ground. The thunderheads are moving quickly overhead and rain is falling in the distance.

Sadly, soon after this shot, the storm decided it wasn't serious, moved off to the right, and began to fade out. No interesting lightning was recorded.

Antelope Canyon is the iconic slot canyon, a photographer's dream with the midday sun bouncing off the water-carved sandstone walls and beams of light illuminating dust in the air. The extreme contrast between the shadows and the light is challenging, but not as challenging as coping with the crowds.

The Navajo Nation runs the concession, taking photographers and tourists through the narrow canyon. Did I say it was narrow? Like soldiers from the Napoleonic era, the photographers work their cameras and tripods in ranks, some kneeling and others standing, while the guides throw up handfuls of sand to catch the light. Then you move along, figuring out exposures while trying to avoid people in your shot.
