San Gregorio, California

Branches strewn on the beach after a storm. I suspect most of them were carried down the adjacent San Gregorio Creek rather than washed in from the ocean.

Death Valley, California

We’re standing at the mouth of the Natural Bridge Canyon, looking west over what is usually a dry salt flat, but which is now the reincarnation of Lake Manly. The Panamint mountains are reflected in its salty waters.

In August 2023 the remnants of a Pacific hurricane dropped a year’s worth of precipitation onto Death Valley in one day. The park was closed for over two months while roads and infrastructure were repaired. When I visited in early December 2023, the water was still there, albeit slowly evaporating, and road repairs were continuing.
