Pacheco State Park, California
The land that is Pacheco State Park was originally part of an 1843 Mexican land grant, El Rancho San Luis Gonzaga, to Francisco Pacheco. His descendants held the land for five generations until Pacheco's great-great-granddaughter, Paula Fatjo, bequeathed her ranch to the state of California. Part of the land had earlier been incorporated into the San Luis Reservoir. Her gift became Pacheco State Park in 1997. The land sits on the eastern edge of the Diablo Range, part of California's coastal ranges, created from sea floor pushed up by tectonic forces. The nearby Pacheco Pass has been a major route between the Pacific coast and the Central Valley ever since California has been inhabited. And as for the photo, this outcropping of lichen covered rock, surrounded by California Poppies and nestled on a grassy hillside, caught my eye. Note that some of the grass on the left has started to turn brown, presumably because of very shallow soil on top of the outcropping. The Valley Oaks have not yet completely leafed out. |
