The Bergkirche ("hill church") is a church in Eisenstadt, the capital of the state of Burgenland in Austria. The church (of Catholic denomination) was built in the early 18th century by Prince Paul Esterházy. Eisenstadt was the seat of the Esterházy family, and the church lies just a short walk to the west of the family's main palace.
The Bergkirche is architecturally unusual and is built in two parts. The main section, the church proper, is approximately a square. The interior is in Baroque style; Humphreys and Bousfield call it "a trompe-l'œil fantasy in pinks and greys".The ceiling takes the form of a dome, which was painted in fresco in the late 18th century by J. W. Baumgartner.

Haydn's tomb
A side chapel is dominated by a large marble sarcophagus, the tomb of the composer Joseph Haydn, who spent much of his career in Eisenstadt working for the Esterházys. The remains of most of Haydn's body have rested here since 1932; the skull was added (with due pomp and ceremony) only in 1954; for the reason for the disparity see Haydn's head.

Above the lake level of Lake Bled rises the only island of Slovenia.

In a glacial basin there are remains of a calcareous hill covered with trees. The island probably had a special meaning already in prehistoric times. The Old Slavic place of worship, which was on the site of today's church, was described by Prešeren, the greatest Slovenian poet. The island is reached by a special boat called "pletna". This type of boat, intended for a rower with two oars, is only known in Bled.

Obviously, the Benedictine Abbey Göttweig towers 422 m above sea level on the eastern edge of the world-famous Danube valley of the Wachau. Since 2000 World Heritage Site, it is today not only an attraction for guests from all over the world, but also a spiritual center in the heart of Lower Austria, supported by a community of 41 monks.

The monastery - also called the "Austrian Montecassino" due to its magnificent mountain location - was founded in 1083 as a monastery for a community of canons, who lived according to the Augustinian rule. In 1094 Göttweig was handed over to the »Benedictines.

Today, only remains of the medieval buildings of Göttweig are present (Erentrudiskapelle from 1072, Old Castle, crypt and choir of the church), as after a devastating fire in 1718, the baroque reconstruction of the monastery was necessary.

The imperial court architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt provided the plans for the grandiose monastery, which was begun in 1720 under Abbot Gottfried Bessel and could be completed to two-thirds.

THE ORGAN OF THE STIFTS CHURCH TO GÖTTWEIG
Göttweig has an old organ tradition. As early as 1600 there were two organs, which were arranged in the presbytery on the left and right above the choir stalls hanging. In 1703/04 they were transferred to the west gallery built for the choir prayer. In 1761, Ignaz Gatto the Elder from Krems created a new work, which was played by a balustrade positive, while pedal and Hauptwerk were housed in the two older slanted boxes.
