From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The giraffe (Giraffa) is a genus of African ungulates, the largest living land animals and the largest ruminants. The genus currently consists of one species, Giraffa camelopardalis, the type species. Seven other species are extinct, prehistoric species known from fossils. Taxonomic classifications of one to eight existing giraffe species based on studies of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA and morphological measurements of Giraffa have been described, but the IUCN currently recognizes only one species with nine subspecies.

The main distinguishing features of the giraffe are its extremely long neck and legs, their horny ossicones and their striking fur patterns. It is classified under the Giraffidae family, along with its closest existing relative, the Okapi. The distribution area extends from Chad in the north to South Africa in the south and from Niger in the west to Somalia in the east. Giraffes usually inhabit savannas and forests. Their food sources are leaves, fruits and flowers of woody plants, especially acacia species, which they search at heights that most other herbivores can not reach. They can be hunted by lions, leopards, spotted hyenas and African wild dogs. Giraffes live in herds of related females and their offspring or bachelor herds of unrelated adult males, but are sociable and can gather in large gatherings. Men establish social hierarchies through "necking", ie combat missions in which the neck is used as a weapon. Dominant males receive mating access to females who are solely responsible for rearing the young.

Gibbon
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gibbons are apes in the family Hylobatidae. The family historically contained one genus, but now is split into four genera and 18 species. Gibbons occur in tropical and subtropical rainforests from eastern Bangladesh and northeast India to southern China and Indonesia (including the islands of Sumatra, Borneo, and Java).

Also called the smaller apes or lesser apes,[3] gibbons differ from great apes (chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, orangutans, and humans) in being smaller, exhibiting low sexual dimorphism, and not making nests. In certain anatomical details, they superficially more closely resemble monkeys than great apes do, but like all apes, gibbons are tailless. Unlike most of the great apes, gibbons frequently form long-term pair bonds. Their primary mode of locomotion, brachiation, involves swinging from branch to branch for distances up to 15 m (50 ft), at speeds as high as 55 km/h (34 mph). They can also make leaps up to 8 m (26 ft), and walk bipedally with their arms raised for balance. They are the fastest and most agile of all tree-dwelling, nonflying mammals.[4]

Depending on species and sex, gibbons' fur coloration varies from dark to light brown shades, and any shade between black and white, though a completely "white" gibbon is rare.

Gibbon species include the siamang, the white-handed or lar gibbon, and the hoolock gibbons.

cheetah
Cheetahs live mainly in Africa. The big cats are the fastest animal in the world. Since they are capable of great acceleration, they are also referred to as Jagdleoparden.
The cheetah, despite its size, does not belong to the subspecies of the big cats, in which also lions, tigers and leopards are represented. Instead, cheetahs are a subspecies of the small cats (Felinae). The scientific name of the cheetah is Acinonyx jubatus.
