k.u.k. Military Geographical Institute
(From Wikipedia)
The building of the Military Geographical Institute in 1860 (center)
The k.u.k. (until 1889: k.k.) Military Geographical Institute was an institution of the Empire of Austria, after 1867 the Joint Army of Austria -Hungary, based in Vienna. It was created on January 7, 1839 from the merger of the Imperial Real Istituto geografico militare and the topographic-lithographic institution of the k.k. Quartermaster's Staff and had its seat from 1841 on at the then Glacis, later Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz 3, in Vienna (at the two-line behind the later built City Hall, the roof of the building adorns to this day an oversized globe).

history
The institute emerged from a similar institution that had been set up in northern Italy under Napoleon. In 1800, a War Ministry of the Cisalpine Republic was created in Milan. This had to collect maps; In 1802, a military topographical corps (Corpo degl'Ingegneri Geografi) was commissioned, which was entrusted with triangulation and land survey. These facilities remained in the later Austrian kingdom of Lombardo-Veneto insisted: Emperor Franz I of Austria approved by hand letter of September 1, 1814, the "provisional Beybehaltung the (military) Bureau topographique in Milan".

Architecture
The design of the richly adorned facade is modelled on the Gothic architecture of Flemish and Brabant secular buildings like the Brussels Town Hall. It features five towers including the central tower with a height of 98 m (322 ft). On 21 October 1882, the Rathausmann statue was installed on the top, which soon became one of the symbols of Vienna. The structure itself, spread over an area of 19,592 m2 (210,890 sq ft), is arranged around seven inner-courtyards, more along Baroque lines. A total space of about 113,000 m2 (1,220,000 sq ft) is spread over six floors and two basements with 1,575 rooms. It is largely built with bricks decorated with limestone, mainly from the Leitha Mountains, and ashlar masonry.
