Eckartsau Castle:
The hunting lodge with world history
Embedded in the Danube floodplains and the enchanting castle park, the imperial hunting lodge Eckartsau tells the exciting story of the end of the Danube monarchy. In 1918/19 it was the last residence of Emperor Karl and Zita in Austria. The rule of the Eckartsauer increased the property and acquired land to the east and west as well as castles, markets and rights. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the residents of Eckartsau changed frequently. Today's magnificent appearance of the palace is largely due to Count Franz Ferdinand von Kinsky. The Bohemian court chancellor bought the property and the Eckartsau lordship in 1720 and had the medieval fortification converted into a baroque hunting lodge. Top artists such as Fischer von Erlach, Daniel Gran and Lorenzo Mattielli played a major role in the elaborate redesign.
The Marchfeld castles east of Vienna combine the splendor of the monarchy with unique encounters with nature and animals. We visited Hof Castle, Niederweiden Castle, Orth Castle, Marchegg Castle and Eckartsau Castle for you.
