A long-standing rivalry

The victory of 1544 is the best known event in the history of Saint-Dizier, and was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the campaign of 1542-1544, between Charles V and Francis I.

The rivalry between the Emperor and the King of France traveled very far back, and had arisen on the occasion of the election at the head of the empire of 1519; Francis I, in spite of the numerous subsidies paid to the electors, had been defeated by Charles V, assisted by the bankers Fugger, probably the most powerful of the time.
