I went to the Memorial Day parade in Jenison this year to capture some street portrait shots. What I look/wish for in my street portrait subjects.....
Usually male (older is better)
rough looking facial hair
lines in his face
sunglasses
hat
tattoo - which is getting easier

So with this guy it was pretty easy to pick him out of a crowd,

Photographing females.....it is not something I do that often. Not sure why but I feel more comfortable photographing men (older, rough looking males) than females. Even the processing is different to me. It is somewhat easy for me to find a male subject and do the processing to make him a little more grizzly, rougher looking. But with females I am a little more uncomfortable and the processing, to me at least is the total opposite.

But I need to get over this fear (best way to describe it) of pointing the camera and getting the shot that I want, Because I really enjoy this street photography especially street portraiture. So if it be male or female I just need to step up and get the shot.

Let me tell you a little about Lee and Ray....

Lee (on the left) and Ray, they have been friends for a little over 50 years, both started their teaching careers at Allendale Christian in 1967. They roomed together before each one got married. They both would get up and be at the school around 5:00AM to do custodial work, as that is what teachers did at Christian schools back then. Allendale Christian was the only school both of them have taught at, Lee was an English teacher and Ray was the Science teacher. They taught their together for over 30 years.

In the summers, during their teaching careers, to make ends meet they started painting together to earn extra money. They still do their painting for a few of their long time customers to this day.

I met these two probably about 6 years ago at the Ravines park by GVSU. Our love of nature and photography is what brought us together. Getting to know these two has been fun and I have really been amazed at their friendship. They keep an eye out for each other as friends should. They solve world problems a couple times a week at 6:00AM over breakfast at Murphy's in Allendale. They chop wood frequently at Rays house in the woods. They both have seen their fair share of medical problems within their families but having the other to lean on really helps them through the tough times.

I have heard many stories from these two as I meet them once in awhile for breakfast at Murphy's. They tell me about travels together, about teaching and how that has changed over the last 50 years, painting stories, and about some of the kids that they have taught. We also talk about Ottawa County parks as Ray is on the Ottawa County Parks board and Lee is the official photographer of the Ravines park where he walks daily, and of course politics. It is neat to see some of their students recognize them either at Murphy's or out and about and the respect that they have for them.

We all should have at least one friend in our lifetime like this.
