- www.kevin-palmer.com - Between moonset and morning twilight, 55 minutes was all the time I had. It sounds like plenty of time. But between 10 minute exposures, swapping lenses, shooting panoramas, and changing locations, it goes by quickly. The bright moon stayed up most of the night, finally setting at 5AM. At this time of year, the Milky Way is best seen before dawn. The galactic core rises to the southeast, arcing all the way across the sky to the northeast. But because of increasing light pollution, there are fewer and fewer places to see it like this. Dinosaur National Monument is an International Dark Sky Park, and the skies here are nearly the same as they were in prehistoric times. The dry desert air of northeast Utah allows a clear view of our home galaxy. The Green River is a major feature of the park, where it carves deep canyons through the Uinta Mountains.
