Trek Day 8 - Concordia (4700m).

View from Concordia towards the valley of the Baltoro Glacier at dawn. For orientation, imagine Concordia as a 'T' junction of glaciers. The bottom of the 'T' represents the snout of the 60km long Baltoro Glacier. As you make your way up to the junction, you pass magnificent peaks such as Paiju, Trango and Grand Cathedral along the way.

Concordia is an amphitheatre of high mountains which truly has no parallel. The American climber and photographer Galen Rowell described it as the ‘Throne Room of the Mountain Gods’. When you stand at the glacial junction and survey the phenomenal array of summits, it is difficult to disagree with him.

An old man at Shaping market, near to Dali. He was from Hong Kong and came to Yunnan as a soldier in his youth. It was a snapshot at a busy market as a personal momento because I enjoyed talking to this old man but I had to decline his invitation to his house as I was leaving soon after. The original background was distracting and the light was less than ideal. Then came a suggestion on Flickr to present this in b/w and the rest is history. Everytime I look at him, his expression seems to say "Why aren't you coming?" A cherished regret.

From the shore of Lugu Lake at Lige. Lugu Lake was formed by a downthrow of a geographical fault. With an altitude of 2685m and the deepest point at 93m, it is the highest and second deepest lake in Yunnan. Other than its scenic beauty, Lugu Lake is home to an unique matriarchal society well-preserved by the indigenous Mosuo people, who are a branch of the Naxi ethnic minority group.

Finally! The elusive Kagebo peak (6740m) of the Meili Snow Mountain! View from Feilaisi. Isn't it beautiful?

Located in Deqin County bordering Yunnan and Tibet, Meili Snow Mountain has 13 peaks . At 6740m, Kagebo is the main peak. This peak tops the list of the Eight Holy Mountains for the Tibetans. Every year, thousands of pilgrims from Tibet, Qinghai, Sichuan and Gansu come here to pay homage to the mountain. The peak remains unconquered because of its precipitous cliffs, frequent avalanches, thick fog and cloud, heavy rain and storms.
