The Netherlands-Medemblik
In the 13th century, Floris V, Count of Holland, gave high priority to the strategial importance of Medemblik during his struggle against the revolting West Frisians. After his final conquest he founded five castles to consolidate his power and to control West Frisia; all of these castles were built between 1282 and 1289. Medemblik Castle was finished in 1287. After the assassination of Floris in 1296, several castellans in the history of the castle succeeded in keeping aggressors outside the gate. But finally, Radboud Castle had ceased to exist as a defending fortress. With the centuries the castle fell in decay and at the end of the 19th century Radboud Castle was a ruin. While most towers were removed, only two square towers were left. After restoration (1890-1934-1964), Radboud Castle has a cultural and educational function nowadays, and is used as a museum-castle with expositions. The Netherlands-Benningbroek
The West-Frisian village Benningbroek is split in two by the A7 highway. East of the highway this charming white church is clearly visible. This eastern part of Benningbroek is in fact a hamlet called De Buurt (the Neighborhood). The originally catholic church dates from 1548; after the Reformation it was confiscated and used by the protesters. Since the 16th century lots of restoration work has been carried out. The Netherlands-Kinderdijk
My first-ever visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site with the windmills near the villages Kinderdijk and Alblasserdam. As an already 67-year old Dutchman, shame on me. These windmills are only a modest remnant of a much larger number of mills, built in the 18th century to drain the polders of a 25.000 ha large area called Alblasserwaard, pretty close to the cities Rotterdam and Dordrecht. Drones are prohibited here, but as always I made my images with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line). © Tom Kisjes
