The Mausoleum of Hadrian, now known as Castel Sant'Angelo or Castle of the Holy Angel, as seen from the Ponte Sant'Angelo.

In 1668, ten huge angel sculptures designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini were placed on the bridge. Each angel carries an instrument related to the Passion of Christ. The figure high on top of the building is Michael, the Archangel, the angel by which the building is known today.

Both the mausoleum and bridge were originally built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as his family mausoleum in the 2nd Century. His ashes, and that of several later Roman emperors, were placed in this mausoleum. After 400AD, the mausoleum was used as a fortress, and the contents of the tombs lost. Today, the building is a museum.

A closer look at a figure of an angel on Ponte Sant'Angelo (originally known as the Aelian Bridge or Pons Aelius).

In 1667, ten angels holding instruments of the Passion of Christ were commissioned to line the bridge. The angel here holds Christ's garment and dice (not visible); it is by Paolo Naldini.
