On the ceiling are scenes from the life of St Peter, and at each end are equestrian statues; of Constantine (visible here, north) and Charlemagne (south). The marvelously shiny marble floors include several papal coats of arms.
There are five doors from the Portico into the Basilica. To the left of the door where visitors are entering (The Door of Sacraments) is the Central Door.

On the left (south) end of the portico of Saint Peter's Basilica is the equestrian statue of the Emperor Charlemagne.
He was proclaimed "Imperator Romanorum" (Emperor of the Romans; a title first held by Augustus Caesar) by Pope Leo III and coronated in the basilica on Christmas Day in the year 800*.

One of the five major doors into the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican from the front portico.
This Porta Santa/Holy Door is also known as the "Door of the Great Pardon". It has sixteen bronze panels depicting scenes of humanity's sin and redemption through God's mercy. The doors open to reveal a wall that seals the entry way. This wall has to be knocked down every Holy Year. This Holy Door is only opened every 25 years; it was last opened in 2000.
The current panels were made by Vico Consorti in 1949. He was known as the "maestro degli usci" (master of the doors) because of the beauty of hisl commemorative doors.
