This statue of the first Polish Pope was carved out of rock salt.

The “Wieliczka” Salt Mine, just south of Krakow, dates from the 13th Century and produced salt until 2007; it was the world's oldest continuously operating salt mine.

Today, visitors come to admire the salt works of art that miners have created out of the rock salt. There are numerous statues and four chapels. This is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This is one of the west entrance to Wawel Hill and its Cathedral and Castle. This is said to be the historic and culturally heart of Poland.

Krakow was Poland's capital till 1596, and the Castle was the King's residence. The Cathedral was the site of the coronations and burials of Poland’s kings even after the capital was moved to Warsaw.

This Tadeusz Kościuszko Monument by Leonard Marconi and Antoni Popielin is at the west entrance into Wawel Hill. Some say this is the best known statue in Poland.

Kościuszko had fought for, and is considered a hero of, both Polish and American independence. He is buried inside Wawel Cathedral.

The original statue was cast in 1920, but destroyed during the German Nazi occupation of the Second World War. The current statue dates to 1960 and is a gift from the people of Dresden, Germany.
