The Last Judgement mosaic over the main door depicts Christ as the Pantocrator between the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist.
Higher still, on the balcony, are the famous four Roman bronze horses; brought to Venice after the sack of Constantinople in 1204.

In this mosaic above the main door, Christ is depicted as the Pantocrator, ruler of the universe. The Pantocrator theme is common in the Byzantine tradition. Jesus in this 'Last Judgement' is flanked by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist.
The mosaic here is a 19th Century replacement of the original which had been destroyed in a fire.

The front facade of the basilica is very ornate and elaborate. Religious symbols and details cover nearly every part of the facade.
In this view in the late afternoon, are two of the four bronze Horses of Saint Mark. These are replicas, the copper mercury gilded originals are kept inside the basilica. The classical antiquity horses were brought to Venice after the looting of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade.
In the background is one of the lunettes with a mosaic of a scene (the Resurrection) from the Life of Christ.
