Inside the lower dome, visitors can walk around part of the lower dome. This is a capture of the view looking up with my phone.
Right at the top here, around the inside base of the dome lantern are inscribed: S PETRI GLORIAE SIXTUS PP V A MDXC PONTIF V; or "To the glory of Saint Peter, Pope Sixtus V, in 1590 the fifth year of his pontificate"
This is surrounded by a circle of star studded blue sky.

This is the view looking south when walking around the lower rim of the Great Dome at St Peter's Basilica. It was in this area that the First Vatican Council met in 1869-1870.
The mosaic medallion on the left here depicts St John the Evangelist. Below him is the loggia containing the holy relic said to be fragments of the True Cross, and further below is the statue of St Helen (only partially visible).
The sculpted bronze canopy roof of Bernini's Baldachin over the High Altar can be seen at bottom centre.
Notice the incredible and beautiful floors of the basilica.

Inside/Under the Dome at St. Peters.
Inside the lower dome, visitors can walk around the perimeter, allowing magnificent views, both looking down and up. It is well worth doing even if you do not want to walk/climb all the way up to the top of the dome.
At the base of the lower dome are inscribed the words: TV ES PETRVS ET SVPER HANC PETRAM AEDIFICABO ECCLESIAM MEAM ET TIBI DABO CLAVES REGNI CAELORVM; of " You are Peter, on this Rock I will build my church, I give to you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven "
The four Evangelists are depicted inside medallions just below the lower dome. The two visible here are Saint Matthew (with his symbol, an ox) and Saint Luke (with an angel). The figures are pretty big, the medallions are about 8.5 meters (28 feet) in diameter.
Below on the ground level is the chapel on the Left Transept and the Altar of the Crucifixion of St. Peter.
