Located just over 35 miles north-east of Venice in the foothills of the Dolomites, Bassano del Grappa is best known for its Ponte Vecchio, a 13th Century wooden covered bridge across the River Brenta.

View of Piazza degli Scacchi and the famous giant chess board.

High on the hill (at centre) is Castello Superiore with the town walls extending on the hill crest. It frames the piazza perfectly and provides a suitably historical setting for the town's chief fame today, the biennial 'human chess' game.

Marostica is about 35 miles north-east of Venice and was part the Venetian Republic (aka La Serenissima) until Italian unification. Note the column with the Winged Lion at right.
