The design and layout of Getty Villa is based on the 'Villa of the Papyri', an ancient Roman villa that was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

Caesar Augustus, also known as Gaius Octavius (Octavian), was the adopted son and heir of Julius Caesar, his maternal great-uncle. He made himself the first Roman Emperor, while maintaining the facade of the Roman Republic. He used both the republican title 'Princeps Civitatis' (First Citizen), as well as the more imperial ancient title of 'Augustus'.
