The idea of the light behind was to solicit a deflection of the needle. Alas, I hoped in vain.
PS - it seems I've overlooked the fact that not everybody is conversant with the history of photographic equipment. In the heroic days of 'modern' photography when exposure times started to come down LIGHT METERS started to appear. Weston was the 'standard'. I have not been able to ascertain the age of my meter but in the 1960s I did use a Weston Master.
