Merseyside
On a stretch of unspoilt coastline the nature reserve of Formby Point near Liverpool boasts sand dunes and attractive pine woods, set between the sea and Formby town. It was the site of the first lifeboat station in the country and maintains its reputation as a safe place to bathe. Picnics can take place on the expanses of dune grassland and open fields, or on the beach just a short walk from the car park. If the rare red squirrels at Formby appear jealous of picnic hampers, generous visitors can satisfy their appetite with the special squirrel food that is sold in the kiosk.
