We spent one of the sunrise shoots during our recent workshop in Mammoth Lakes at Silver Lake. We arrived about 45 minutes before sunrise and were able to witness the unfolding of a glorious morning through all of it's stages of blue, reds and pinks, alpenglow, and bright yellows.

I'm glad I had the presence of mind to take a few pictures along the way instead of just soaking in this beautiful sight! ;-)

The Fairmont Hotel is seen nestled in the impressive Canadian Rockies on the shores of the frozen Lake Louise. This shot is taken from the top of the gondola at the Lake Louise ski resort across the valley.

When I realized that last night would be moonless, I decided to drive to a dark site and give the D3s a run at high ISO night photography. The above image was taken at Craters of the Moon National Monument. The sky glow is from the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory sites in the desert to the east and Arco, Idaho.

The performance of the D3s did not disappoint. No noise reduction was used on these images. In camera, I did turn on the long exposure noise reduction and the high ISO noise reduction was set to "Normal."

The predawn light was so soft and the colors wonderfully intense and almost surreal in this Civil Twilight 2 minute exposure at Convict Lake. It didn't take long for reality to set in. Within about 5 minutes the light quickly increased turning harsher and more yellowish. The magic was gone. Yet another reminder to me to arrive at location and start shooting early for best light and those special moments.

1 hour and 10 minutes before sunrise the sky was already starting to lighten a bit at Landscape Arch in Arches National Park. Orion and Pleiades were still plainly visible among the myriad of stars in the south-west sky.
