By 1981 our twins were old enough to stay with their grandparents so that (funded by me presenting a paper in Athens) we were able to spend a while exploring some of the Greek islands. These 2 snaps of M on Paros just came to light,.

M was drying in brilliant the sun just after our first swim. Walking along the path from the village it was clear that clothes were optional on the shore!

Another photo of this scene (caution: restricted). See also M on the way back...

For the background story, please see the intro to the set...

PS Feb 2011. This is a new, higher quality version
(An earlier version has 32,000 views and 23 favs)

There is something special in the look of a head-and-shoulders portrait taken when naked – often this can be missed because the viewer naturally wants to take in the whole view. I am therefore making a series of "naked portraits", cropped from original nude photos, which can also be flagged "safe" so they can be seen by a wider range of people. For some of them the full framehas been archived and is no longer on display, but this one is back in public view.

Intro to the original photo, "First Swim" in the Aegean Sea:
M emerged from the water feeling exhilerated and refreshed on our first day in Paros. After a stifling stay in Athens and a difficult ferry trip - it suddenly all seemed worthwhile.

By 1981 our twins were old enough to stay with their grandparents so that (funded by me presenting a paper in Athens) we were able to spend a while exploring some of the Greek islands.

We arrived in Paros about 1am having "jumped ship" on our way to Santorini because the ferry was seriously overloaded and the plumbing had failed so the indoor seating areas were flooded with sewage. The kind "Tourist Police" found us an amazingly luxurious room for 2 nights in a just opened hotel in Aliki on the south of the Island and we were able to catch the last bus there. Despite the hour we were given a friendly welcome and only charged B&B prices. By the time we had breakfast and wandered off along the rocky coast in the brilliant sunshine with the clear blue sea beside us the journey had faded to a vague nightmare.

Our first experience of the Greek Islands in 1981 was an unplanned visit to Paros where we "jumped ship" on the way to Santorini. It was beautifully quiet and peaceful and we stayed 3 days before moving on to Mykonos (we never did get to Santorini).

This is a snap of M on the way back to our hotel in the wonderful calm of the evening - most people had left the beaches by this time but it was still very warm.

For the background story, please see the intro to the set...

PS Mar. 2021: this is a new higher-quality version of the photo originally posted 8 years ago...

Probably the last printable slide scan from the Greek Islands 1981 series - just a snap of M walking back along the coast path in the evening after a great day exploring the beaches on the south of Paros.

For the background story, please see the intro to the set...

Tech. note: the scanner did a remarkable job on this very high contrast slide with almost no shadow detail visible even with a bright light. there was also a strong red/magenta cast to the mid tones because of the low sun and green fogging of the shadows due to the film getting hot before it was processed.
I have just reposted a slightly improved version (less green in the shadows)

Even when the sun was about to set it was enough to warm Marie's back after the last swim of the day - there was no need to carry a beach towel as we wandered along the shore, just a bottle of water (and a camera).

PS: I think this was taken a few minutes after this one of her emerging from the sea.

For the background story, please see the intro to the set. The next day we caught the boat to Mykonos...

Tech. note: scanned Kodachrome slide, taken on an Olympus OM-2n with a Zuiko 100mm F2.8 lens.
