A mother-and-daughter beach snap from a holiday in Brittany - I came across this slide at the back of a drawer recently and scanned it to see the details as I idin't have my slide projector with me. At the far end of the east-facing beach on te Quiberon peninsula it seemed to become clothes-optional, so it was worth the walk to be able to enjoy skinny-dipping and the feeling of freedom that goes with naturism.

I like the sunshine and the way it catches the hair and skin... it brings back the nice memory of our first holiday abroad with the children (all 4 of them!)

Not my original photo. See the original scan (caution: link NSFW), that "Alex and Lory" asked me to re-edit (the photo they originally posted is no longer publicly visible on their account).

It is not badly exposed and the colour balance is not far from a natural look though there is a slight red cast, especially in the shadows. The main problems is that the scan quality and resolution are too low with excessive sharpening creating obtrusive double edges.

I had to figure out a way of "de-sharpening" the image without losing fine detail. Based on signal processing theory, the extreme sharpening is equivalent to to a narrow band-pass transient filter, causing a strong edge-effect. My solution was to make a copy layer; blur it by the same number of pixels that removed the edge-effect (2.2); then sharpen by ⅓ the number of pixels to restore some of the hidden detail without bringing back the lines. I then made the modified layer only 50% opaque over areas that did not show the hard edges, especially the skin textures to bring the original look back.

Finally the face details were partly lost due to fogging by the back-lighting, so I increased the contrast in the faces and applied some active filtering to the eyes. In the full frame, I also straightened the horizon on the left and added a slight vignette effect.

Two early morning winter shots of our little medieval church in Gourvillette, where my daughter was married last year.

See a summer shot of it from the south east.
