A juvenile black phase New Zealand Fantail (Rhipidura fuliginosa). Friendly little birds who snap up tiny insects on the wing with their darting and twisting flight. The Maori name is Piwakawaka.

My first experience of photographing these little birds nearly 45 years ago, was with a Asahi Pentax Spotmatic II camera, 135mm lens, small flash and a 30 foot air release. Camera was focused on a branch I had seen a pair of fantails use the previous day. A wet cork on a glass bottle is a good sound attractant and soon I had a fantail alighting on the branch, and also a couple of times landing on the camera (I wish I had a second camera). One 36 exposure Kodachrome was shot over a couple of hours for just a couple of usable images.

One of the friendliest species of birds in New Zealand, along with the New Zealand Robin. They rarely stay still and will come within a foot or two of you looking for small flying insects you disturb as you walk. Common in all areas of New Zealand apart from the treeless mountains. I have had them land on my lens several times.
