In the past 30 years I have been heavily involved with two local clubs - the New Brighton Photographic Club and the New Brighton Cricket Club. I served on committee of the cricket club for about 10-12 years including two as club President. My two boys started playing for the club when each was six, and Alastair still plays and is on the committee now.
In the early hours of August 22nd the building and many historical photos, trophies etc was destroyed by fire - see next few photos. It was arson (suspected). Since the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 the building was deemed too expensive to bring up to the new earthquake standards and the insurance lapsed.
The club is now fund raising through the Give A Little site to enable cricket to start in a few weeks time (juniors and seniors) - all club owned equipment was destroyed, and to look at rebuilding in Rawhiti Domain.

Union Parish Church spire just before sunset on 22/01/06. Five years and one month to the day the spire of this church will have been lifted off the brick work and the brick church ready for urgent demolition due to the major earthquake that struck the Christchurch area at 12:51pm on 22/02/11. The spire still sits on the ground beside the empty section where the church was.

One from 2006. We had just returned from a steam train excursion when we heard the New Brighton Volunteer Fire Brigade appliances nearby. A look outside showed a lot of smoke a couple of streets over.

Waste water/sewerage is discharged untreated into the Avon River ten days after the devastating 6.3 magnitude earthquake. The Delta truck has probably delivered aggregate to road works in the streets of Bexley. Many other trucks are removing the 180,000+ tonne of liquefied silt that erupted over the eastern suburbs of Christchurch.
