Back in 2005 my local camera club had a set subject competition running called "Heritage". I knew this was one of the photos I wanted to enter but I had to wait till I had purchased a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, and the resulting image was taken while returning to work after purchasing said lens.

I entered it in the competition only to have the judge chuck it out as in his words "there is no statue in front of the Cathedral and this image is therefore Photoshopped"! He was lambasted by other members but his final comment was "I have never seen a statue in front of the Cathedral, so have judged it as that".

In the devastating earthquake of 22/02/2011 the spire of the Cathedral collapsed and Godley's statue toppled over.

John Robert Godley looks on Christchurch Cathedral a few years before earthquakes ruined this scene. Godley's statue and the bell tower of the cathedral fell in the February 22 2011 quake and the Rose window fell in, in the June 13 and December 23 quakes of same year.

A picture that can never be replicated "one shot, in camera", as this one was shot.

Statue (monument) to Robert Falcon Scott (Antarctic explorer) with the word "ICE" in background. ICE comes from "police" on the then Christchurch Police Station. I felt there was good juxtaposition with the word "ice" and Scott depicted to be standing on ice.

This pic was taken a few years before the earthquakes that struck our area. In the destructive quake of February 22 2011 the statute toppled to the ground and the multi-storey Police Station was damaged. It (the Police Station) was later demolished (late May 2015) by implosion.

For a few years the statue was seen in the museum, but I understand that it has been returned or will be returned to it's original plinth.

The central Police Station is now in a different part of the city, about five minutes walk away from where it was.

Shooting data: Canon 10D with EF17-40mm lens at 17mm.
