Stringer's Bridge, inland from Amberley, North Canterbury. Most likely January or early February 1971. The Kodachrome slide mount has a Feb 71 processing date stamp on it. Shot with a Kodak Instamatic (a proper one with a good lens, not a plastic toy!).
Included in the photo (taken by my father) is my great uncle, my sister, my mother and myself.

That is me (nearly 17 years old), about to head to Auckland from Christchurch for the 1971 Xmas/summer holidays, on my first jet flight (my previous North Island trips had been via Viscount and/or DC3). I am carrying my school satchel, tent poles (they couldn't go as checked luggage) and a 120 Agilux Agifold camera. This is about 18 months before I got my first new camera - an Asahi Pentax Spotmatic II. I even had to wear a tie (just to fly to Auckland)!

If I remember correctly this was about 10 days before Xmas (after high school had finished for the year), so it is possible that there is exactly a 40 year gap (to the day) between the photo being taken and image being uploaded to Flickr.

The airline was NAC (National Airways Corp) which later merged into Air New Zealand (NAC was domestic, ANZ was international). Note that this was years before air bridges!

I needed my tent as I was to spend several weeks at Kennedy Bay on the Coromandel Peninsula with my aunt and uncle (they only had a 1 bedroom bach, so I had my pup tent).

The photo (a bit dirty, but will replace when I get a cleaned up scan) was shot on Kodachrome slide film with a British Kodak Instamatic by my Dad.

Hard to believe that five years later I was married and a seasoned traveller with five trips to Fiji.

I don't know who owned the Rollei, maybe something he had borrowed, but I wish I had it now! Stringers Bridge on the Waipara River in the days you could picnic or camp there. 24th February 1973. Ilford FP4, Asahi Pentax Spotmatic II. My dad passed away 5½ years after this (September 1978).

This lady became my mother-in-law less than two years after this photo was taken. This is beside the main road between Suva and Nausori (just the Suva side of the Nasinu Seven miles bridge), on what was then a quiet main road (very few people had cars then). Now it is a 4-lane very busy road.

Nasiban bore 13 children although two died in childbirth. She passed away a few years ago.

Originally shot on an Asahi Pentax Spotmatic II with the brilliant Takumar 85mm f/1.8 lens, on transparency film, and scanned on an Epson V700 scanner. Post processing (crop and minor colour adjustment) in Adobe Lightroom.
