“SPRINTER”

The sprinter sculpture was designed by artist Dominique Sutton and commissioned for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. The sculpture is 16 meters high and weighs more than 8 tonnes. The sculpture was part of a set of three sculptures located on top of Centre Point Tower. The other two sculptures were then relocated to Canberra after the Games, however the Sprinter has found a new home in Sydney Olympic Park.

I have wanted to get this for quite some time, and this afternoon was time…. The air was still (forecasted otherwise), so off I went… However, when I got there, it was far from still, and having to dodge 11KVA meant I had issues, so want I REALLY want, will now have to wait a little longer - stay tuned!

Thornham is a village on the north Norfolk coast, about four miles from Hunstanton. Situated in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the village is separated from the sea by salt marshes which are penetrated by several inlets such as this one. Although Thornham was once an important port those days are long gone, due mainly to silting up.

Among the salt marshes there is the remains of an ancient port, which was used - among other things - to unload coal brought down the coast from Newcastle. In later times the coal was stored in the building with a red tile roof at the side of the creek. Built from hand-made bricks and flints, the building is believed to date from the 18th or 19th centuries, and is known as the Coal Barn. This old port area is still home to a few fishing boats.
