Drainage mill , constructed 1862, relocated 1960
This polder mill was used for draining polders. In 1953, it was in an extremely dilapidated condition in Groningen. Following reconstruction in 1960, the mill looked a whole lot better. It uses an Archimedean screw to force up water. This is a screw-shaped device that is able to raise water by two metres.

Deze poldermolen was in gebruik voor het droogmalen van de polder. In 1953 stond de molen in zeer vervallen staat in Groningen. Na de herbouw in 1960 zag de molen er een stuk beter uit. De molen maalt water omhoog met een vijzel. Een vijzel heeft de vorm van een schroef en kan het water twee meter omhoog verplaatsen.

Drawbridge, constructed 14th century, relocated in 1939
This typical Dutch bridge construction originally spanned the river Amstel. Anyone wishing to navigate their boat past the bridge had to pay a toll. You can still read the scale of charges that were in force at that time on the yellow upright supports. The bridge was raised by pulling on the chains and the bridgeman used his own weight to lower the bridge by running up the sloping bridge deck.
Even those wanting to cross the bridge on foot had to pay to do so. The payment was made on reaching the other side.

Deze typisch Hollandse brugconstructie lag oorspronkelijk over de Amstel. Wie per schip de brug wilde passeren, moest tolgeld betalen. De toendertijd geldende tarieven staan te lezen op de gele staanders (hameien). Het ophalen van de brug gebeurde door aan de kettingen te trekken, het neerlaten deed de brugwachter door tegen de schuine wip of klap op te lopen. Zijn gewicht zorgde ervoor dat de brug naar beneden ging.
Ook degenen die de brug te voet wilden oversteken moesten betalen. Ze betaalden wanneer ze de brug waren overgestoken. Hier komt het gezegde 'over de brug komen' vandaan.

Constructed in 1885, relocated in 1947
This boatyard was situated on a small island in the middle of Marken harbour. The level of the floor is particularly high to ensure that it was not flooded during high water. The boatyard was reached via a long footbridge. It was a repair yard, rather than a boat building yard. Boats were hauled up the slipway using the capstan.

Deze scheepswerf lag op een eilandje midden in de haven van Marken. De vloer ligt extra hoog, zodat men geen last had van hoge waterstanden. De werf was te bereiken via een lange loopbrug. Het was een reparatiewerf die geen schepen bouwde. Met de kaapstaander werden schepen op de kant getrokken.

Constructed in 1745, relocated in 1948
The square shape of the building and pyramid-shaped roof is reminiscent of a cheese-cover ('Stolp' in Dutch) and it is this shape that gives it its name. The farmhouse is in fact a large haymow with the rest of the rooms situated around it. This was very practical. The cows were always nearby and the box beds were built on the side where the hay was, making it nice and warm in the winter.

Typerend voor de stolpboerderij is de vierkante vorm, en het dak in de vorm van een piramide. Eigenlijk is de stolpboerderij één grote hooiberg, waaromheen de overige ruimten te vinden zijn. Dat was heel praktisch. De koeien waren altijd vlakbij en de bedsteden waren gemetseld aan de kant waar het hooi was. Dat was ’s winters lekker warm.
