The Crater Creek wildfire in the summer of 2023 scorched more than 46,000 hectares in the Ashnola River area. The Cathedral Lake Provincial Park base camp bridge that crossed the Ashnola was destroyed. The provincial park was heavily damaged by the fire, along with numerous trails and animal habitats. This fire was started by a lightning strike and was hard to get to because of steep and dangerous terrain. It crossed the US border into Washington State, where it eventually burned out.
