Unusual coloration for a woodpecker, like a Rufous Mourner (www.flickr.com/gp/cswood-photos/22Q0XZt0F5). Rather stunning to see in the deep green forest.

We came upon this lovely lady at the end of our 4 hour, nearly 3 mile hike. “Uncommon and local” according to eBird, this species occurs across most of Central America. Throat spotting on the female can glow violet in the right light, but this bird stayed in the shadows.
