Still experimenting with all of the various scanner settings to achieve the best possible scans of my 4x5 B&W negatives from my Epson Perfection 3200.

This image was made back in the middle 90's with my 15 ft. canoe, which after 10 years of service…including 2 years out in Colorado..was destroyed in the 2004 hurricane Charlie that hit us.

I have made many large B&W prints of this one. Note: if you click on the down arrow icon on the far right, you can view this image in much more detail at it's full uploaded size.

Many of my Nature & Wildlife images are now available in beautiful canvas wrap prints as well as canvas prints in a natural wood floater frame. Please email me for details. jmwnaturesimages@comcast.net I have now moved all of this information over here at Flickr. Look for the album titled "Fine Art Canvas Prints".

Continuing on with scanning some of my old 4x5 B&W negatives from yesteryear, this image was an image made on one of my many solo boating trips on Charlotte Harbor The number of images that I have made here are many to say the least.

I added a little digital art form on this image, which you will need to click on it to see what was done. I also put a slight sepia tone over it and some hand tinting of color to enhance the over all image.

Continuing on with scanning some of my old 4x5 B&W negatives from yesteryear, this image was an image made on one of my many solo canoe trips on this river. The number of images that I have made along this river are many to say the least. This location is in one of the many very jagged rocky rapids that can make this canoeing this river interesting. I was lucky enough to know the owners of the local canoe outpost and they gave me one of their plastic canoes to use rather than risk totally destroying my fiberglass canoe. They were also kind enough to take me upstream to the headwaters spring and pick me up later that afternoon.

The original scan of this image is over 50 inches at 300ppi with my traditional sepia tone that very closely appears as that of my wet process prints. The long exposure time to render the water the way I wanted to convey it also cause some slight branch blurring. Click on the down arrow icon on the far right and choose the larger size to view this.

Although I only canoed this river once, and a short section at that, this was truly a beautiful place for photographing. For me the best time of year to go there was in the spring when the water level was low enough to expose the cypress tree root systems. The only downside of that time of year is that you really need to watch out for water moccasins. They hide in and around all of those exposed root systems and blend in very well. A little paddle splashing before getting out of the canoe is well worth it. Note: if you click on the down arrow icon on the far right, you can view this image in much more detail at it's full uploaded size.

When I canoe I see compositions at that eye level in the middle of the river and getting out on a piece of nice dry land generally does not give the same sense of what was seen when in the canoe. So this generally requires having to get out of the canoe and drag it out into areas of deeper water and hope that it doesn't get too deep. This is where I first envisioned the image I wanted to capture so this is where I must be, but then again I spent more time out of my canoe than in it. Getting out and wading the dark murky waters of this river produced this image.

Photographing in large format required the use of a heavy tripod and long exposure times for the tremendous depth of field required for landscape images, so hand holding these cameras is out of the question.
