Lake Istokpoga is a 28,000-acre freshwater lake in Highlands County, Florida. The oblong-shaped lake is 5 miles wide by 10 miles long. Despite its area, it is very shallow, with an average depth of only 4 feet. Maximum depth is 10 feet.

What does Istokpoga mean?

"People have died there" It was so named by the Seminole Indians because in the early 1800's, before they became a tribe, their people tried to cross the waters of Lake Istokpoga and were swallowed up by whirlpools.

This lake is somewhat similar to Blue Cypress Lake, but about a third larger.

This is a hand held 3 image hdr made in a rocking boat. The water was too deep to put the tripod over the side, so I did the best I could, all the well knowing that Dynamic Photo HDR5 has provisions for manually aligning image with as many multiple pin point as you wish. So I though that I would give it a try...and it did remarkably well.

This image was a bit challenging,as it was made from a tripod in the water next to my boat. I had to sit on the floor to be able to see the back of the camera. This is a 3 image hdr with a separate blend on a single image for the FG. The wind was blowing about 10 knots or better and not only was the boat bouncing up and down but everything in the FG was moving back and forth.

I think in retro-spec,next time I'll crank up the ISO much higher.

What little bit I have explored this lake, it does remind a bit of Blue Cypress Lake. As you can see by the Spanish Moss leaning in one direction,it was a bit brezzy.

This is a 2 image vertical panoramic.

A week or so ago Mike Jones and I went to Lake Istokopoga for some cypress tree shooting. I was more than a bit off my mark that day,we all have them,so I just decided to concentrate on getting the boat into position for Mike to get the images he needed. I deleted almost everything I made that day. This image was kept because I liked the cypress tree root system with the arching curve and reflections in the water. Mike obviously saw the same identical composition and made:this image

It shows that people (photographers)see things quite differently and its not often we can see much the same image made with seconds of another. I generally prefer to look for compositions that eliminate the harsher lighting of late morning and look for smaller compositions, often using my 100-400mm lens to zoom in and capture what I call "the picture within a picture". I no longer sharpen any image intended for Fluckr, but as you can see this image was oversharpened...once again by Fluckr, Thanks F.
