This is the site of a historic and stii working grits mill. The mill is a vertical turbine type, driven by diverting water from the river to a narrow flume thus creating the water velocity to turn the turbine wheel.

My cousin told me about this place last year, but I didn't make it then. This guy bought a 40 acre parcel of land that has a small creek running through it. They built a 6 ft. high dam across it to back the water up into a pond. Then came in and added hugh boulders making a great waterfall. They built their house on concrete pilings across the downstream side of the stream and dam. It was very hard to photograph this because of the amount of trees they left in place. That was not enough for them, so they bought up some very old log cabins and a grits mill and had them rebuilt on their property. They even had lots of goodies seen here for people to enjoy and showing the period of time of over a hundred years ago.

The grits mill is an actual working mill.

Well, I'm back. I start out with the last image made on this great trip....well sort of when you exclude the fact that I have blown out my right knee last Saturday trying to get up to the summit of this overlook.I wanted a nice sunset from the highest point in Georgia where you can see 5 states. I had nearly damaged the right knee while hiking down the Dark Hallow Falls, in Shenandoah NP. I didn't realize that this hike had some very steep locations associated with it. I got there at the wrong time of day, with the sun in my face. No way to know these facts unless you hike down to the falls. This is one reason that I give a pretty good description to my images to help others plan. But when you on the move you don't always have the luxury to come back at the right or best times.

The right knee gave out completely while trying to go up the last steps to the summit. I saw stars and lots of little birds flying around through watery eyes for about 5 minutes. The worst thing was that the tram stopped running at 5 PM...it was after 6 and there was no park service people to drive up to help. I finally was about to stand and use the tripod to gingerly make my way back down to my car....it took over 90 minutes to do that in the dark. Every dark bush appeared like a black bear, which were still moving in the area. I will know the completed damage report tomorrow, but will accept anything to relieve the pain at this point. I need it repaired.

The Maine Moose was great shooting, Acadia NP on the coast of Maine was also great...good thing my knee held up for those two locations. The Moose required a one mile round hike, twice a day with no major problems. Bouncing around the large rocky shoreline of Acadia was without problems.....just that steep uphill/downhill hiking.

My computer station is not setup for keeping legs out straight, so I'm a bit side saddling to get things done. There are 30 folders of images to sift through and reduce for this trip, which was cut short by about 10 days. I drove the last 10 hours back home using cruse control and left foot braking...felt like I was sitting in the back of the car. Actually it was quite comfortable, but not the safest way to drive.

So hopefully I will get back to some sort of reality soon, if not going under the knife, but I'm prepared.

Good to get back to seeing all the great images, you my friends, are posting.

Michael

This old log cabin was a relocate and restore to this site, and as you can see it had a lot of goodies displayed for anyone wanting to just drive up and and walk in...very trusting people in Northern Georgia.
