A male Osprey makes use of a shallow riffle in British Columbia’s Okanagan River. Bathing and general feather maintenance are critical for birds of all types; particularly so for species such as the Osprey that rely heavily on their skilled and powerful flight for capturing prey. As an obligate piscivore, this eagle plunge dives for fish swimming at or just beneath the water’s surface.

Canon R5 | Canon 500mm f/4 IS with Canon 1.4x Teleconverter iii | 1/5000th | f/5.6 | ISO 1600

At the edge of a pond on British Columbia's Interior Plateau, a male Pied-billed Grebe sinks slowly beneath the water's surface. This gradual descent – akin to that of a submarine – is controlled by the release of air trapped between the bird's feathers and body.

Canon 7D Mark ii | Canon 500mm f/4 IS with Canon 1.4x Teleconverter iii | 1/2500th | f/5.6 | ISO 1600
