Sunset
Chimney Top Rock
Red River Gorge Geological Area
Daniel Boone National Forest
Kentucky

Originally when my wife and I had planned to visit some good friends last Friday who were playing live at The Pit House in Slade, I had no intention of taking my camera. However, as I drove home from work earlier in the day and saw the clouds I thought, hmmmmmm. Maybe I should, just in case, and I am glad I did. There was a lot of play into my chances of catching sunset at Chimney Top Rock in the Red River Gorge. Anything could happen on the two hour drive and we needed to eat too. I was hoping my arrival time to drop Lisa off at The Pit House was going to be 7:15. As we approached the Red River Gorge on Mountain Parkway thick black clouds were overhead but there were still scattered clouds in the west. Again, I was doubting if heading up to the overlook would be worth it, but as we pulled into the parking lot for The Pit House at 7:25 it was apparent that I might be in store for something special. Per the norm I’m running against time to make it in time to catch sunset. Dropping Lisa off I bolted up to KY 715 and then Chimney Top Rd where I popped the Rav into “Sport” mode and continued to barrel down the muddy gravel road. About 3/4ths of the way down Chimney Top Road I came across this car going 15 mile per hour. At this point I could see into the valley below and conditions were epic. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” I thought. And nope, he didn’t want to pull over and let me pass either. We finally made it to the parking lot for Chimney Top Rock, I hurried up to use the restroom where the driver got out and asked, “Oh my goodness, did you need to use the restroom too?” I almost laughed because he was not driving like he had an emergency. I made the 3/4th of a mile hike and arrived at the overlook with about 15 minutes to spare and though I missed the sunburst opportunities by mere minutes, sunset turned out to be really awesome!
